In Forster-Tuncurry, the e-scooter trial has been prolonged until June 30, 2025, or until the NSW Government releases regulations concerning e-scooters. The decision to extend the trial was backed by MidCoast Councillors after a fruitful 12-month period. Since December 2024, there have been more than 60,000 trips taken on rentable e-scooters, covering over 126,000 kilometers until the end of October 2025.
On most days, more than 100 rides are recorded, with figures spiking significantly during holiday seasons. According to Rob Scott, the Director of Infrastructure and Engineering Services, hireable e-scooters have provided additional transportation choices for individuals, reducing the reliance on cars, and have gained popularity among both tourists and locals. Local businesses in Tuncurry and Forster have actively supported the availability of hireable e-scooters, facilitating easier movement for customers within the area.
However, a primary concern among residents is the issue of abandoned hire e-scooters, which not only diminish the visual appeal but also pose potential trip hazards when left on footpaths. To address this, Mr. Scott encourages individuals who come across incorrectly parked e-scooters to report the matter to Beam, the service provider, who will promptly rectify the situation. Reporting a discarded e-scooter to Beam can be done by scanning the QR code on the device or by visiting their website.
It is important to note that personal e-scooters are currently prohibited on NSW roads and road-related areas, including footpaths, shared paths, and bicycle lanes, and are only allowed for use on private property. For further details regarding e-scooter regulations in NSW, individuals are advised to visit the official website of the NSW Government dedicated to exploring e-mobility options.
The positive reception of e-scooters in Forster-Tuncurry highlights a shift towards sustainable and convenient urban mobility solutions, catering to the needs of both residents and tourists alike. As the trial continues, efforts to address issues related to the proper parking and management of e-scooters are crucial to ensure their continued success and integration into the local transportation ecosystem.
