Gareth Ward MP Launches Community Survey on E-Scooters and E-Bikes

Gareth Ward, the Member for Kiama, has initiated a community survey to gather input from residents in the Kiama electorate regarding the regulation of e-scooters and e-bikes. Concerns about safety have been expressed by local residents, prompting Ward to encourage participation in the survey, which will be active for one month. The feedback collected will be shared with the NSW Government upon completion of the survey.

The safety of local residents is a paramount issue, particularly as the misuse of e-scooters and e-bikes can pose risks to vulnerable groups such as the elderly, parents with strollers, and individuals with disabilities. Notably, the lack of Australian Design Rules for electric scooters has led to the development of trial recommendations by the Transport for NSW ESA Working Group. These recommendations underscore the importance of investigating evidence-based vehicle specifications to ensure adequate visibility, speedometer accuracy, braking efficiency, and maneuverability.

In response to the evolving landscape of e-mobility devices, the NSW Parliament launched an Upper House inquiry in June 2024 to examine the usage of e-scooters, e-bikes, and other mobility devices. Ward anticipates reviewing the final report of the inquiry, including its policy recommendations, to inform his stance on potential law reforms. The survey initiated by Ward will complement his position on legislative changes in this domain.

It is essential to create safe and inclusive environments in public spaces, train stations, shopping centers, and streets to accommodate the diverse users of e-scooters and e-bikes. Furthermore, exploring the societal benefits of e-mobility devices, such as promoting mode shift, alleviating traffic congestion, addressing social inequalities, and boosting tourism, is crucial.

The State Government faces the challenge of striking a balance between various interests while prioritizing public safety. Ward emphasizes the necessity for decisive actions to be taken to uphold safety standards and cater to the needs of all stakeholders effectively. The ultimate goal is to ensure that the use of e-scooters and e-bikes enhances community well-being while maintaining a secure environment for all individuals.
