A plan to repurpose a deserted motocross site into an e-motorbike track on the Gold Coast has gained traction, aiming to address the rising issue of illegal road riding among young people in Queensland. The City of Gold Coast has endorsed the leasing of Andrews Reserve in Reedy Creek to the Electric Moto Parks Australia Club, with intentions to transform the area into a ride park specifically catering to e-motos.
John Bettini, President of Electric Moto Parks Australia Club, emphasized the need for a safe space where young riders can enjoy their e-motorbikes responsibly, away from public roads. He highlighted the importance of curbing illegal road riding by providing a controlled environment for enthusiasts to engage in recreational activities and competitions.
However, concerns have been raised within the council regarding the potential of the ride park to inadvertently promote risky behaviors associated with e-motorbikes. Some council members fear that rather than deterring illegal road riding, the park could inadvertently encourage it, leading to further safety hazards in the community.
Under existing state laws, e-motorbikes must adhere to specific regulations, including registration, insurance coverage, and licensed operation.
