Kiama MP Gareth Ward Launches Survey on E-Scooter and E-Bike Safety

Kiama MP Gareth Ward has initiated a comprehensive survey focusing on the safety aspects of electric scooters and e-bikes within the Kiama electorate. The survey aims to gather feedback from residents regarding the regulation of these increasingly popular modes of transportation. Ward emphasized the importance of addressing safety concerns raised by local residents, particularly in situations where e-scooters and e-bikes are not used responsibly, potentially endangering vulnerable groups such as the elderly, parents with prams, and individuals with disabilities.

The absence of Australian Design Rules for electric scooters has prompted a call for evidence-based vehicle specifications to ensure crucial safety features like visibility, speedometer accuracy, braking systems, and maneuverability are adequately addressed. Highlighting the significance of this issue, Ward referenced the trail recommendations from March 2020, developed by the Transport for NSW ESA Working Group. Furthermore, he acknowledged the NSW Parliament’s establishment of an Upper House inquiry in June 2024, focusing on the use of e-scooters, e-bikes, and other mobility devices. Ward expressed anticipation for the inquiry’s final report and the subsequent policy recommendations that could influence potential law reforms.

In his efforts to advocate for community safety and inclusivity, Ward stressed the necessity of creating secure environments for all individuals, including those utilizing e-scooters and e-bikes, in public spaces like streets, shopping centers, and transport hubs. He also underlined the positive impacts of e-mobility devices in promoting mode shift, reducing congestion, addressing social inequalities, and enhancing tourism experiences. Ward emphasized the State Government’s responsibility to strike a balance between various interests while prioritizing public safety as a paramount concern.

By launching this survey and engaging with the community, Ward aims to gather valuable insights that will inform his stance on potential legislative reforms concerning the use of electric scooters and e-bikes. The ultimate goal is to ensure that regulatory actions taken by the government align with the diverse needs of the community while upholding safety standards for all individuals using these innovative modes of transportation.
