In a bid to enhance urban mobility and promote eco-friendly transportation options, Montgomery County is rolling out a series of adult bike and e-scooter classes throughout April, May, and June. These classes aim to equip residents with the necessary skills to confidently navigate the streets while reducing congestion and carbon emissions.
Organized by the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT), the low-cost adult bike classes offer a range of sessions, including Learn to Ride and Basic Skills classes. To complement the bike training, participants can also attend free walk-up e-scooter classes following select bike sessions.
Registration is essential for the bicycle classes, with a nominal fee of $10 for Montgomery County residents. However, members of the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA) or Capital Bikeshare For All can avail of these classes free of charge. The program provides bicycles and helmets at no cost for Learn to Ride participants, with the option to rent from WABA for Basic Skills class attendees.
County Executive Marc Elrich highlighted the importance of these classes in promoting safe and sustainable transportation alternatives. Riding a bike or e-scooter not only fosters a healthier lifestyle but also contributes to reducing traffic congestion and environmental impact.
The curriculum for the Learn to Ride bicycle classes covers essential skills such as starting and stopping, balancing, pedaling, and steering. Led by experienced WABA instructors, these classes cater to individuals aged 18 and over, with limited spots that fill up quickly.
For those interested in e-scooters, drop-in classes are available immediately after selected bike sessions. These two-hour classes, open to individuals over 18 with a valid driver’s license or ID, provide e-scooters and helmets for participants.
With a growing demand for adult bike classes, MCDOT has expanded its offerings to include more locations and sessions. The county is also enhancing its infrastructure with protected bike lanes in key areas like Silver Spring and North Bethesda, further promoting sustainable transportation practices.
To register for these classes or for more information, visit the WABA website or MCDOT’s official page. Embrace the future of urban mobility by mastering the art of biking and e-scooting, and contribute to a greener, more efficient cityscape.
