In a move towards sustainable transportation, MidCoast Council has decided to extend the ongoing e-scooter trial in Forster-Tuncurry until June 30, 2025, or until the NSW Government announces regulatory provisions concerning e-scooters. The decision to prolong the trial was supported by MidCoast Councillors, spurred by a successful 12-month period.
Since its inception in December 2024, the e-scooter trial has witnessed an impressive uptake, with over 60,000 trips recorded on rentable e-scooters covering a total distance exceeding 126,000 kilometers up to the end of October 2025. Daily usage statistics reveal that more than 100 rides are taken regularly, with these numbers surging significantly during peak holiday seasons.
Notably, hireable e-scooters have emerged as a preferred mode of transport, offering enhanced mobility options while reducing reliance on traditional cars. Director of Infrastructure and Engineering Services at MidCoast Council, Rob Scott, emphasized the popularity of e-scooters among tourists and locals alike. Local businesses in Tuncurry and Forster have extended their support to these initiatives, facilitating convenient travel experiences for customers within the region.
However, a key concern raised by residents pertains to the improper disposal of hire e-scooters, which not only detracts from the visual appeal of the area but also poses potential safety hazards when obstructing footpaths. To address this issue, residents are encouraged to report any instances of misparked e-scooters to Beam, the service provider, who will dispatch staff to rectify the situation promptly.
It is crucial to note that personal e-scooters are currently prohibited on NSW roads and associated areas such as footpaths, shared paths, and bicycle lanes, limiting their usage to private properties. For comprehensive information on e-scooter regulations in NSW, individuals are advised to visit the official NSW Transport website.
In conclusion, the extension of the e-scooter trial underscores MidCoast Council’s commitment to promoting eco-friendly transportation alternatives and fostering a culture of sustainable mobility within the community. This initiative not only aligns with broader environmental conservation goals but also reflects a progressive approach to addressing contemporary transport challenges.
