E-Scooter Safety Campaign Targets Risky Riding Behavior

In an effort to enhance e-scooter safety, Victoria’s Transport Accident Commission (TAC) has initiated a comprehensive road safety campaign targeting risky riding behaviors. The surge in e-scooter-related accidents, often involving intoxicated riders seeking thrill and amusement, has led to a significant strain on hospital resources and orthodontist services.

This safety campaign aligns with the recent implementation of stringent laws in Victoria aimed at curbing irresponsible riding practices. These laws encompass stricter penalties for infractions such as riding without a helmet, using footpaths for riding, and carrying passengers. Notably, riders found operating e-scooters under the influence of substances face repercussions equivalent to those imposed on motorists, including the potential loss of their licenses.

The TAC’s campaign focuses on three primary objectives: raising awareness among e-scooter riders regarding existing regulations and penalties, educating them on safe riding practices, and fostering long-term behavioral improvements. Central to this initiative are a series of videos utilizing stop-motion animation to depict toy-like e-scooter riders engaging in hazardous behavior, culminating in depictions of riders enduring severe injuries.

Data from the TAC reveals that common e-scooter-related injuries necessitating hospitalization predominantly involve limb, head, and facial injuries. The likelihood of sustaining severe harm or fatality significantly rises when riders flout road rules, such as neglecting to wear helmets or riding under the influence.

Underpinned by research indicating that many Victorians perceive e-scooters as mere playthings, failing to recognize the potential dire consequences of disregarding safety measures and regulations, the campaign seeks to rectify this misconception. Moreover, the research underscores a widespread lack of understanding concerning key laws governing e-scooter usage.

Minister for Active and Public Transport, Gabrielle Williams, emphasizes the increasing popularity of e-scooters as a mode of transportation in Victoria and underscores the role of new legislation in fostering a safe riding environment. Williams underscores that riders play a pivotal role in ensuring their safety and that of others by adhering to regulations. The campaign serves as a clarion call to individuals who underestimate the risks associated with e-scooters, viewing them solely as harmless and enjoyable diversions.

Scheduled to run from December 2024 to January 2025, the campaign will be disseminated through various channels, including online platforms, radio, social media, outdoor advertising, and culturally diverse media outlets. By leveraging a multi-faceted approach, the initiative aims to reach a broad audience and instigate a shift in attitudes towards e-scooter safety practices.
