While e-bikes and e-scooters offer convenient mobility options, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has highlighted the grave risks posed by battery safety issues. Most of these vehicles are manufactured to meet stringent standards; however, proper maintenance and handling are crucial to prevent potentially fatal accidents. The batteries that power e-bikes and e-scooters mainly come in two types, with lithium-ion batteries being the most prevalent due to their energy efficiency and durability. Despite their advantages, mishandling or damage to these batteries can lead to overheating and fire outbreaks. In contrast, nickel-metal hydride batteries are considered safer but are less common due to their lower energy capacity.

One significant danger associated with lithium batteries is thermal runaway, a process where the battery overheats uncontrollably, potentially resulting in fires or explosions. RoSPA has issued clear guidelines to mitigate these risks, advising users to use the manufacturer’s charger, disconnect it after charging, and adhere to specific safety protocols recommended by the Office for Product Safety and Standards. Regular battery inspections for any signs of damage such as swelling, unusual odors, or visible defects are also recommended. In cases where damage is detected, users are urged to discontinue use immediately and dispose of the batteries safely through appropriate channels.
