A jury at Derby Crown Court was presented with footage showing the moments leading up to the tragic death of Alana Armstrong, a young mother who was allegedly rammed by a 4×4 vehicle while riding as a passenger on an electric bike. The incident, which occurred on Batley Lane in Derbyshire, resulted in Ms. Armstrong losing her life after the defendant, Keaton Muldoon, reportedly made repeated attempts to hit the bike she was on.
Although the actual collision was not captured on camera, the prosecution displayed footage of a Land Rover Discovery, believed to have been used in the incident. Ms. Armstrong, aged 25, tragically passed away at the scene, while her boyfriend, Jordan Newton-Kay, suffered severe injuries, leading to the amputation of his right leg.
Keaton Muldoon, aged 23, from Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, denies the charges of murder and causing grievous bodily harm with intent. The court was informed that Ms. Armstrong and Mr. Newton-Kay were seen leaving an address on electric bikes with another individual, James Gilbert, on a separate bike.
Det Con Natalie Barnett of Derbyshire Police’s major crime unit testified that GPS data from Mr. Newton-Kay’s phone indicated their route and the proximity to Muldoon’s vehicle. The court was shown CCTV footage of the bikes being followed by the 4×4 driven by the defendant on the fateful evening.
Further evidence presented to the jury included footage of a yellow Seat Leon being delivered to Mr. Muldoon the day after the incident, reinforcing the prosecution’s claim of a vehicle swap following the fatal crash. It was revealed that Mr. Muldoon had admitted to causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving before the trial commenced.
This case underscores the dangers associated with reckless driving and the devastating consequences it can have on innocent lives. The courtroom proceedings shed light on the events leading up to the tragic incident and the subsequent legal actions taken against the accused.
The trial continues as the court examines additional evidence and testimonies to determine the culpability of the defendant in the untimely death of Alana Armstrong and the injuries sustained by Jordan Newton-Kay. The pursuit of justice in this harrowing case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and responsible driving practices.
