A St Helens man named Darren Lawton has been sentenced for multiple driving and drug-related offenses in the area. The incident occurred on October 18, 2024, when Lawton was seen riding a stealth bomber electric bike recklessly on Hinckley Road in St Helens. Lawton, aged 27, not only evaded police during a pursuit but also failed to comply with an officer’s instructions, in addition to operating the bike without a valid license and insurance.
Lawton, residing on Harris Street in Dentons Green, was also found to be in possession of cannabis and was driving the electric bike while under the influence of the drug, with 8.3 micrograms of the substance detected in his bloodstream. Following his apprehension, Lawton admitted guilt to all six charges during a court hearing held in April.
At a subsequent appearance at Liverpool and Knowsley Magistrates Court on June 3, Lawton received a 20-week custodial sentence for driving dangerously. He was also handed a two-week sentence for driving under the influence of drugs and an additional seven-day sentence for cannabis possession. However, these shorter sentences will run concurrently with the longer custodial term.
Despite the severity of his offenses, Lawton’s stable accommodation, mental health issues, and potential for rehabilitation were taken into consideration by the magistrates. Consequently, his sentence was suspended for 15 months and will be supervised. Lawton will be subject to a 12-week curfew with electronic monitoring and must comply with specified activities for up to 15 days.
Furthermore, the court disqualified Lawton from driving for 30 months and ordered him to pay £85 in costs to the Crown Prosecution Service. This sentencing serves as a stern reminder of the legal consequences that can arise from reckless and unlawful behavior on the road, especially concerning the operation of electric bikes and the use of illegal substances while driving.
Law enforcement agencies continue to prioritize road safety and crack down on individuals who pose a threat to themselves and others through dangerous driving practices. The case of Darren Lawton underscores the importance of obeying traffic laws, possessing valid licenses, and refraining from driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
This incident serves as a cautionary tale, emphasizing the potential legal ramifications and personal risks associated with irresponsible behavior behind the wheel. As the authorities maintain vigilance in enforcing road regulations, it is imperative for all road users to prioritize safety and adhere to the law to prevent harm and ensure a secure environment for everyone.
