As summer approaches, children in St. George are back on their electric scooters, a trend that has raised concerns among the local police department. According to Sergeant Jeremy Needles, young kids, some as young as 8 years old, are riding these scooters, posing risks, especially when navigating around vehicles.
Recently, a collision involving a young scooter rider was captured by CollisionCam, a company documenting accidents at hazardous intersections in Utah. The incident, which occurred at the junction of Riverside Drive and Mall Drive in St. George, highlighted the potential dangers when drivers fail to notice scooter riders.
Needles emphasized the importance of vigilance for both scooter riders and drivers at intersections. He advised scooter riders to come to a complete stop and establish eye contact with drivers before proceeding. As for drivers, he stressed the need to double-check their surroundings, including sidewalks and blind spots, to prevent accidents.
Regulations stipulate that electric scooters should not exceed 15 miles per hour and are prohibited on roads with speed limits exceeding 25 miles per hour in St. George. Moreover, children under nine years old are advised against operating electric scooters, while teenagers between nine and 15 should be closely supervised.
In case of accidents at designated locations, individuals can request footage from CollisionCam for free by visiting their website or contacting them directly. This initiative aims to promote safety awareness and provide valuable insights into potential risks associated with electric scooter usage.
With the increasing popularity of electric scooters among children, it is crucial for both parents and authorities to prioritize safety measures and enforce regulations to prevent accidents and injuries. The collaboration between law enforcement agencies and technology-driven solutions like CollisionCam plays a vital role in promoting road safety and reducing the risks associated with electric scooter usage.
