Member for Kiama Gareth Ward has initiated a community survey to gather feedback on the regulation of e-scooters and e-bikes in the Kiama electorate. The survey aims to address safety concerns raised by local residents regarding the use of these electric mobility devices.

Ward emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of all community members, especially vulnerable groups like the elderly, parents with prams, and individuals with disabilities, who may be at risk due to inappropriate use of e-scooters and e-bikes. He highlighted the need for evidence-based regulations to address key areas such as visibility, speedometer accuracy, braking, and maneuverability.
In response to the absence of Australian Design Rules for electric scooters, recommendations were made in March 2020 by the Transport for NSW ESA Working Group. These recommendations underscored the necessity of investigating vehicle specification baselines to enhance safety features and capabilities.

The establishment of an Upper House inquiry in June 2024 by the NSW Parliament to examine the use of e-scooters, e-bikes, and other mobility devices reflects the growing importance of regulating these forms of transportation. Ward expressed anticipation for the inquiry’s final report and its policy recommendations, emphasizing the survey’s role in informing potential law reforms.

Recognizing the need for safe and inclusive public spaces, Ward stressed the significance of balancing various interests while prioritizing public safety. He highlighted the potential benefits of e-mobility devices in promoting mode shift, reducing congestion, addressing social disparities, and boosting tourism.

As Ward advocates for clear actions by the State Government to safeguard community well-being, he underscores the importance of creating a harmonious balance between different stakeholder interests. His commitment to ensuring the safety and inclusivity of public areas underscores the ongoing efforts to regulate e-scooters and e-bikes effectively.
By engaging with local residents through the survey, Ward aims to gather valuable insights that will inform his stance on potential law reforms and contribute to the ongoing dialogue surrounding the regulation of e-mobility devices. As the community’s voice plays a crucial role in shaping future policies, Ward’s initiative underscores the collaborative approach needed to address safety concerns and enhance the overall usability of electric scooters and e-bikes.
