India has unveiled an ambitious plan to introduce 100,000 electric buses over the next five years, aiming to revolutionize urban transport and combat pollution. The initiative, known as the ‘Bharat Urban Megabus Mission,’ is set to kick off in 2025 with a focus on major cities with populations exceeding one million.
The Indian government is pushing for a significant shift towards public transportation, with a goal of making it the primary mode of travel for a majority of citizens by 2030. By reducing reliance on private vehicles, the plan aims to address issues like air pollution and traffic congestion, envisioning a future where 60% of motorized trips are made through public transport by 2030.
To support this massive undertaking, India has allocated a substantial sum of 1.75 lakh crore Indian rupees, with a significant portion dedicated to funding electric bus operations and infrastructure development. The plan includes provisions for enhancing walkways and cycling paths, promoting non-motorized modes of transportation in urban areas.
Officials from the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs emphasize the mission’s broader objectives of promoting public health by curbing air pollution and encouraging active modes of transport. Additionally, the government plans to reduce the Goods and Services Tax on affordable bicycles, making cycling more accessible to the public.
In a related move, the Ministry of Heavy Industries has launched the PM E-Drive scheme to incentivize the adoption of electric vehicles, offering subsidies to state transport agencies for procuring electric buses. The scheme aims to facilitate the acquisition of 14,028 electric buses by March 2026, further bolstering India’s electric transport ecosystem.
These developments align with India’s broader efforts to embrace sustainable mobility solutions and reduce carbon emissions in line with global environmental goals. The country’s commitment to electrifying its public transport sector reflects a growing trend towards cleaner, more efficient urban transportation systems worldwide.
As electric mobility continues to gain momentum, initiatives like India’s electric bus deployment plan serve as a testament to the transformative power of sustainable transportation solutions. By prioritizing public transport and investing in eco-friendly infrastructure, countries can pave the way for a greener, more sustainable future for urban mobility.
With the electrification of transport becoming increasingly crucial in the fight against climate change, India’s bold vision for electric buses sets a positive example for other nations looking to transition towards cleaner, more efficient transportation systems. As cities grapple with the challenges of urbanization and environmental degradation, embracing electric transport solutions is essential for creating healthier, more livable urban environments for future generations.
