Dubai has seen a remarkable 90% reduction in road fatalities and accidents since 2007. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Dubai Police recently reviewed the progress made in implementing the Dubai Traffic Safety Strategy 2022—2026 during a high-level coordination meeting. This significant achievement was attributed to various factors, including enforcement efforts, infrastructure improvements, and awareness campaigns.
The collaborative efforts led by Mattar Al Tayer, Director General of RTA, and Lieutenant General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police, have been instrumental in driving down fatality rates. The success of 53 joint programs and initiatives in 2024 has brought Dubai closer to its vision of zero fatalities, setting a global benchmark in traffic safety.
Performance indicators showcased a notable improvement in road safety, with a substantial decline in fatalities and serious injuries. The reduction in pedestrian fatalities, combined with enhanced enforcement in areas like pedestrian crossings and the use of personal mobility devices such as electric scooters, contributed to the overall decline in road incidents.
In 2024, over 255,000 individuals were reached through eight major awareness campaigns, and educational videos on traffic risks garnered over 117 million views. Furthermore, enforcement efforts resulted in the recording of more than 145,000 violations related to delivery motorcycles, bicycles, e-scooters, and pedestrian crossings.
Authorities also focused on road engineering projects to enhance safety, including the installation of raised pedestrian crossings and infrastructure upgrades to support soft mobility users. The rise in personal mobility device usage, with bicycle trips increasing by 5% and e-scooter trips by 8.7%, underscored the need for a dedicated Personal Mobility Monitoring Unit to ensure compliance and regulate traffic flow on cycling lanes.
The Roads and Transport Plan 2030, presented during the meeting, outlined key strategic pillars for future developments, such as infrastructure upgrades, transport policy measures, public transport expansion, and smart traffic systems. The commitment to improving traffic safety and mobility standards remains a top priority for both RTA and Dubai Police, with plans in place to expand inspection campaigns and enhance licensing procedures for delivery drivers.
In conclusion, the concerted efforts of RTA and Dubai Police have significantly transformed Dubai’s traffic landscape over the past decade, setting a new standard for road safety and mobility in the region. The continuous collaboration between these entities underscores the city’s commitment to ensuring the well-being of its residents and visitors through innovative solutions and strategic initiatives.
