Cincinnati is implementing restrictions on rental bikes and electric scooters during the upcoming Fourth of July weekend. The city will limit nighttime rentals of Red Bikes and electric scooters in the urban core area as part of a trial program aimed at addressing recent crime spikes. Concerns have been raised about the potential misuse of these vehicles in criminal activities.
City officials announced that from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. over the holiday weekend, rental bikes and scooters, including those from Bird and Lime, will not be available for rent in Downtown and Over-the-Rhine. This move comes in response to a surge in crime across Cincinnati, particularly in the urban core, prompting city leaders to take proactive measures to combat the issue.
A roving task force has been established to target crime hotspots, and new crime-fighting tools such as remotely-piloted drones have been introduced as part of the city’s efforts to enhance public safety. Both law enforcement and residents have expressed concerns about the potential misuse of Red Bikes and rental scooters in criminal activities, leading to the decision to restrict their availability during nighttime hours.
While Red Bikes will still be accessible during the day and in areas outside of the restricted zone, riders will not be able to rent them in Downtown and Over-the-Rhine during the designated nighttime hours. Rental electric scooters in Cincinnati already have agreements that dictate where and when they can be ridden, as well as speed restrictions. These scooters are currently prohibited from being rented between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. every day of the week.
Councilman Mark Jeffreys, a vocal supporter of the Red Bike program, has expressed concerns about the city’s decision to target the bike-sharing initiative. He emphasized the importance of Red Bikes as a transportation asset for residents, enabling them to access jobs and essential services. Jeffreys has requested data from the city manager to support the decision to restrict Red Bikes during nighttime hours.
Cincinnati police spokesperson Lt. Jonathan Cunningham highlighted the necessity of considering community insights and concerns in addition to data when addressing crime issues. He noted that the Street Crimes Task Force observed instances where Red Bikes were used for criminal activities, facilitating quick movement across the city for unlawful purposes such as accessing parking garages for theft and evading law enforcement.
The decision to limit the availability of Red Bikes and rental scooters during nighttime hours is part of a broader strategy to enhance public safety and reduce criminal activities in the city. By restricting access to these vehicles during high-crime periods, city officials aim to mitigate the potential misuse of these resources for unlawful purposes.
According to a survey of Red Bike riders, most users utilize the bikes occasionally for social events, indicating the service’s importance in facilitating recreational and transportation needs. Similarly, ridership data for rental electric scooters in Cincinnati shows peak usage in Downtown, particularly during evening hours on weekends, before the scooters are deactivated for the night.
As Cincinnati continues its efforts to address crime and disorder, the temporary restrictions on rental bikes and electric scooters represent a proactive measure to safeguard public well-being and prevent the misuse of these resources for criminal activities.
