In St. Johns County, the number of e-bike incidents has seen a significant surge, with the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office (SJSO) reporting a total of 20 cases in the first five months of 2025, compared to just eight incidents recorded throughout 2024. This uptick in e-bike-related incidents has raised concerns about safety on the roads, especially as the popularity of e-bikes continues to grow.
During 2024, the SJSO responded to eight incidents involving e-bikes, six of which were classified as crashes, while the remaining two were hit-and-run incidents. However, the situation took a turn for the worse in 2025, with the SJSO already having responded to 20 e-bike incidents by June 11. Out of these, 18 were crashes, one involved a DUI, and another was a hit-and-run incident.
Over the two-year period, a total of 17 incidents were reported involving collisions between e-bikes and vehicles. The second most common category of incidents, encompassing both years, involved e-bikes losing control, underscoring a critical area for safety enhancements.
Adding to the growing concerns, Wolfson Children’s Hospital reported a staggering 222% increase in patients with injuries related to e-bike or e-scooter accidents from 2023 to 2024. Based on data from the initial five months of 2025, the hospital predicts a doubling of e-bike or e-scooter injuries compared to 2024, stressing the importance of wearing properly fitted helmets as a simple yet effective safety measure.
Recognizing the pressing need for improved e-bike safety regulations, state lawmakers are actively engaging in discussions to explore potential solutions. The focus is on implementing comprehensive safety measures to safeguard both e-bike riders and other road users.
With the escalation in the number of e-bike crashes in the region, the SJSO has informed the community about their heightened enforcement efforts concerning e-bikes and motor scooters. As authorities take steps to address the surge in e-bike incidents, it remains crucial for all road users to prioritize safety and adhere to regulations to prevent accidents and injuries.
