Hospital emergency doctors are raising concerns about the increasing number of serious injuries related to e-bikes as their popularity surges. Dr. Tom Crofts from St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney has witnessed cases of severe injuries like lacerated organs, head injuries, and broken bones resulting from e-bike accidents. The availability and usage of e-bikes have grown significantly, especially in urban areas.
Dr. Crofts highlighted that alcohol often plays a role in these accidents, as riders opt for e-bikes as a convenient mode of transportation after consuming alcohol. He suggested reforms such as lockout periods to restrict access to e-bikes during late hours. Dr. Rohan Laging, from The Alfred in Melbourne, emphasized the speed factor, noting that e-bikes can reach higher speeds than traditional bicycles, leading to more severe injuries upon sudden stops.
The latest data from the Victorian Injury Surveillance Unit showed a substantial increase in e-bike-related hospitalizations, with a notable rise in injuries among young adults. Despite regulations prohibiting the use of modified e-bikes exceeding 25km/h on public roads, incidents involving such e-bikes continue to occur. Concerns have been raised about the safety of underage riders and the need for further research on e-bike usage among children.
Following a fatal accident involving an e-bike in Victoria, calls for stricter regulations and bans on certain e-bike models have surfaced. While the NSW government has taken steps to legalize e-scooters, no changes have been made to e-bike regulations. Queensland has initiated a parliamentary inquiry to address the surge in injuries related to e-mobility devices, including e-bikes and e-scooters.
Minister for Transport and Main Roads in Queensland, Brent Mickelberg, emphasized the importance of considering research and expert opinions to ensure a safe environment for e-scooters and e-bikes, especially with the upcoming 2032 Games. The Queensland Police reported issuing numerous fines for illegal e-mobility device use on public roads.
As the e-bike industry continues to expand, it is crucial for policymakers to strike a balance between promoting sustainable transportation options and ensuring public safety. With the increasing popularity of e-bikes, there is a growing need for comprehensive regulations and enforcement measures to prevent accidents and protect riders and pedestrians alike.
