An unfortunate incident occurred on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula where a pedestrian lost his life after being hit by an e-bike allegedly traveling at 80 km/h. The victim, a 69-year-old man from Hastings, was crossing the road when the collision took place. He sustained severe injuries and was airlifted to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, where he tragically passed away.

The e-bike rider, a 24-year-old man from Hastings, also suffered injuries and was taken to The Alfred Hospital for treatment. The police revealed that the e-bike had undergone significant modifications, including the addition of extra batteries to enhance its power capacity. The bike was reportedly held together with duct tape and cable ties, posing a serious hazard to both the rider and the public.
Inspector Craig McEvoy from the Major Collision Investigation Unit emphasized the dangers of riding a modified e-bike at high speeds, stressing the risks posed to the rider and the community at large. The rider, who is known to the authorities, is facing serious charges in connection with the incident and is currently hospitalized.

McEvoy highlighted the legal requirements for e-bikes, stating that any bike exceeding 25 km/h should be registered, licensed, and equipped with necessary safety gear such as helmets and proper lighting. He urged riders to adhere to regulations and avoid making unauthorized modifications to their electric bikes to prevent similar tragedies.

The unfortunate event coincided with National Road Safety Week, prompting law enforcement to remind all riders to prioritize safety and comply with road regulations. The incident marks the 12th road fatality in Victoria since the weekend, underscoring the importance of responsible and lawful behavior on the roads.
As investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the collision, authorities are urging the public to be vigilant and exercise caution while on the roads. The tragic loss of life serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of reckless behavior and the importance of adhering to road safety measures.
While e-bikes offer a convenient and eco-friendly mode of transportation, their misuse and illegal modifications can have devastating outcomes, as seen in this unfortunate incident. It is crucial for riders to prioritize safety, follow regulations, and ensure that their vehicles are compliant with the law to prevent accidents and protect lives.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident, and the community is urged to cooperate with law enforcement to prevent similar tragedies in the future. By promoting responsible riding practices and raising awareness about road safety, such incidents can be minimized, creating a safer environment for all road users.
